Dance on Center 2015
Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m. at the Osher Studio in Downtown Berkeley

Kathryn Roszak's Danse Lumiere presents the second in a new series of dance choreography in downtown Berkeley. Dance on Center 2015 features new works by women ballet choreographers.  Works will be presented by Dalia Rawson, Lissa Resnick, Kathryn Roszak, and Persian ballet choreographer Shahrzad Khorsandi.    Ballet San Jose Trainees Director Dalia Rawson brings trainees to perform "Remembering Rain," inspired by the California drought. Lissa Resnick, a choreographer with L.A. roots, will show a new version of  "Mulholland Drive," originally created in and around the canyons above Los Angeles.  Kathryn Roszak will show her "Romeo and Juliet" pas de deux, in addition to "Reverse Flow" and "City Noir" with a jazz score. Shahrzad Khorsandi will show a new version of  "Chai-khooneh" with women portraying men in a Persian cafĂ©, and a new solo.  Persian dance has been outlawed by Iran for the past three decades and Shahrzad both preserves tradition and creates contemporary Persian ballets. Danse Lumiere is the first dance company to perform in the Osher Studio, which is also the home for the company and its classes.  Roszak says, "Berkeley has a downtown arts district which mainly features theater and music, everything from Berkeley Repertory Theatre to Freight and Salvage.  With Danse Lumiere's performances, training program, and the new dance series, the company is putting professional dance on the downtown Berkeley map." This program highlights contemporary ballets by women, a minority group of choreographers in the ballet world.

Kathryn Roszak's Danse Lumiere is acclaimed for adapting literature for the stage, having collaborated with Maxine Hong Kingston and Gary Snyder.  Danse Lumiere was selected as one of the top ten performances of 2011 in the San Francisco Bay Guardian for their performance of "Pensive Spring" presented by Cal Performances at the Fall Free For All.  Danse Lumiere has performed their original productions combining dance with drama in the Bay Area at the Herbst Theater, Grace Cathedral, the Asian Art Museum, and the University of San Francisco.  Nationally, the company has performed at The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., La MaMa E.T.C., New York, and at the Copenhagen Cultural Festival, Denmark. Danse Lumiere was given a proclamation last year by the Mayor of Berkeley for their work with dance, which includes Artistic Director Kathryn Roszak's role as Dance Specialist with Cal Performances.  The company's production of Kathryn Roszak's "Secrets on the Way," inspired by the Swedish Nobel Prize-winning poet Tomas Transtromer, was presented last year by Scandinavia House in New York City and that same work will be screened at the 92nd Street Y in New York City this May. Lou Fancher wrote a feature article on Danse Lumiere which appeared in the San Jose Mercury News: http://www.mercurynews.com/top-stories/ci_22890895/danse-lumi-re-stays-step-at-downtown-berkeley
