JAZZ IT UP Music Series @ Sorrento Restaurant with GRUPO YURI
New Jersey's hot jazz and blues music concert event welcomes you to Jazz It Up on the last Wednesday of every month at Sorrento Italian Restaurant, located at 631 Central Avenue, Westfield, NJ just one mile from GSP exit # 135. The music series continues on Wednesday, September 29 at 7pm with a performance by acclaimed jazz violinist Yuri Turchyn along with GRUPO YURI.
GRUPO YURI is five piece musical group performing an array of diverse styles from World Beat, Latin and Jazz flavors. The group is led by violinist Yuri Turchyn whose compositions are featured by the excellent musicianship of the band. The band has performed at jazz festivals throughout New Jersey and such luminary clubs as Trumpets and Shanghai Jazz Club. Grupo Yuri was originally organized in 1996 and performed extensively through the year 2000. In 2005, Yuri decided to re-form the group with its present line-up after a five year hiatus. With new material and a zest for live performance, the band has been on a mission to expand its sound and present it to diverse audiences. Grupo Yuri performed at the inaugural concert at South Orange's new Performing Arts Center in October, 2006. Their passionate and superbly energetic original music was a hit with the audience at their first concert appearance at SOPAC. Other more recent venues where the band has performed to great audience enthusiasm: The Sweet Sounds of Downtown Jazz in Westfield, NJ; The Arts Factory in Bayonne, NJ; The Black River Music and Arts Festival in Chester, NJ; NJPAC Sounds of The City in Newark, NJ;The Dancing Goat in South Orange, NJ; Riverfest Jazz and Blues Festival in Red Bank, NJ; The Asbury Park Jazz Festival; Trumpets in Montclair, NJ and numerous others. The group's founder, writer and violinist
Yuri Turchyn, has had a highly visible career as a featured premier performer. Robert Santelli (The Asbury Park Press) wrote "Yuri's violin style and execution were tantamount to ground-breaking innovations in music." Yuri was a founding member of the music group Kinderhook, which took the tri-state music scene to new horizons. Mr. Turchyn, a seasoned studio session player; has also performed and was interviewed on the Spanish NBC - Telemundo Cablevision network and has produced, engineered and played on the Teatro Si (the premier Hispanic theatre company in NJ) CD releases along with many of his other musical accomplishments. The present members of Grupo Yuri are seasoned players from diverse backgrounds. Bassist Jim Grant is known for his groove oriented playing and drummer Al Selert has been a much sought after player in the tri-state area for years. Guitarist Ernie Fortunato is recognized as one of the finest jazz players and percussionist Stacy Grant has a keenly developed sense of rhythm from his years as a member of M'Zume, a drum oriented samba group. Violinist Yuri Turchyn has synthesized the diversity of these musicians into a fine ensemble; a finality of a long sought musical journey. Grupo Yuri is where sophisticated music is headed in the age of mass media. Their melodic and rhythmic sound defies genre labeling. Rather than putting them in a category box, all one has to do is listen and be seduced by the music. Classically trained jazz violinist Yuri Turchyn has written all the selections from their eponymous CD available on their website. Grupo Yuri is the sound of the 21st Century.
The ticket price of $20 includes the concert, a choice of Music Menu entree, dessert and a beverage. BYOB is welcome. Showtime is from 7pm to 9pm. Seating and food service for the concert experience starts at 6pm. The venue, home of the original tomato pizza pie and more, offers the perfect ambience for a relaxing evening of good food and drink, good friends and listening pleasure. A destination for sophisticated families, couples and singles to enjoy life! Plenty of free parking. Conveniently located off of GSP Parkway Exit 135.
