An Evening with Roy Book Binder
Roy Book Binder is a blues-singing, guitar-picking, song-writing raconteur who's been going strong for 40+ years. He learned his craft in the early 1960's from legendary blind street singer Reverend Gary Davis, who received national recognition when his song "If I Had My Way" was recorded by Peter, Paul, and that Mary person. Roy
has been interviewed by Terry Gross on the NPR feature "Fresh Air." He was showcased on the Emmy-award-winning segment of the PBS television series "EGG Art in America." And Roy has appeared more than 30 times on Ralph Emory's highly-regarded TV series "Nashville Now."
Jorma Kaukonen, founding member of The Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, has recorded one of Book Binder's songs on his latest album. Of Roy, Kaukonen says, "Nobody writes in the idiom better than Roy. He wrote 'The Preacher Picked the Guitar,' passed it on to me, and it is an honor to include it (in my album)."
Characters Roy has met in his travels have become part of a Roy Book Binder show which is hilarious, educational, and not to be missed. Some notables: three peg-legged dancers and a 90-year-old classic-blues singer with a sparkling smile. "Behind the humor lurks a musical master," wrote the Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald. You get it all when Roy comes to town...and the Josephine Grey Parlor at the Lake Street Church is the perfect setting to enjoy Roy's richness and warmth.
