Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs with Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside
Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs
Star Anna & the Laughing Dogs come from Ellensburg WA, where they have been playing together since 2006. They have released two full length CDs (both to critical acclaim), and have been touring regionally for the past two years. Their music blends brutal honesty with haunting imagery, always brilliantly captured in Star Anna's powerful, aching vocals. And with the fiery playing of guitarist Justin Davis, drummer Travis Yost and bassist Keith Ash, and keyboardist Ty Bailie, this is one of the rare singer-songwriter fronted groups that do not compromise the music for the lyrics. Instead, the band lays down an instrumental foundation for Star Anna, perfectly mirroring her intensity and integrity. Like another voice, the band joins the conversation. A soaring guitar solo carries a plaintive line to a different level. A steady rhythm section anchors the anguish of heartbreak.
Star Anna & the Laughing Dogs are as honest and unrelenting as the winds that blow through the high plains above Star Anna's Central Washington hometown.
Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside
Sallie Ford hails from Asheville, North Carolina, just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoying a musical upbringing surrounded by performers, she grew up playing the guitar and the violin in addition to singing. On a whim, Ford pulled up her Carolina roots and moved across the country to Portland, Oregon, where she has been writing songs since 2006. She met drummer Ford Tennis and bassist Tyler Tornfelt in 2008, and then a year later met lead guitarist Jeff Munger while he was performing on the streets. Though inspired by the vocal stylings of old jazz, blues and soul singers like Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Etta James, Sallie and her three-piece band, "The Sound Outside," also seek a contemporary sound to throw into the mix. Continuing to enjoy the musical community in Portland, Oregon, Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside self-released their EP "Not An Animal" in May 2009. Their first full-length album is forthcoming, and has a release date planned in Early winter 2011.
