Rock Out ALS is an organization formed to unite the music industry behind awareness of ALS with a national expansion planned for 2011.
ALS (better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a 100% fatal Motor Neuron Disease (MND) that attacks the brain's ability to communicate and control the body's "voluntary muscle function". It eventually leaves a fully functioning / feeling / emotional brain in a motionless and speechless body until death, which is typically 2 - 5 years.
Remember the video for Metallica's ONE, where clips from Johnny Got His Gun were used? It's very similar at the end of an ALS Patient's life, but without the bobbing of mores code.
Imagine what "voluntary" muscle function really is: you can hold your breath; you voluntarily speak; you choose how many times to chew and when to swallow. You feel an itch and scratch it. These are only SOME of the voluntary muscle functions victims of Lou Gehrig's Disease loose.
The is little to no understanding of what causes ALS, and there is no cure. There is no text book method in which ALS attacks it's victims so recognition is often delayed.
Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS. Every 90 minutes someone DIES OF ALS. These stats keep the number of people living with ALS estimated at a steady and constant 30,000 people in the U.S. alone. ROALS believes that the numbers could be closer to 75,000 to 100,000 because of the large potential of MIS-Diagnosed, LATE Diagnosed and UN-Diagnosed.
ALS is an expensive Disease to live with, requiring Tracheotomies, Ventilators, Catheters, Oxygen Machines, Motorized Mobile Chairs, Eye-Tracking communication devices and software, Feeding Tubes, Mobility Vans, Home remodels, in home caregivers and costly Medications that do very little.
In the last 100 years, our medical community has only "cured" Polio. We have found ways to "delay" the progression of many diseases, which at one time were 2-5 year death sentences such as MS, Parkinson's, AIDs and many cancers, so that those patients can live longer, more dignified lives. This is not the case for ALS.
ALS is not one of the "sexy" diseases with multi-million dollar Madison Avenue advertising budgets. ROALS see's it as it's duty to change that.
