The Mellow Yellow Experience
On August 21st, 2010, the Vergennes Opera House will host The Mellow Yellow Experience, an immersive musical theater show that transports audience members back to the time when the "Baby Boomers" were coming of age. The show features live music, dancers, outrageous costumes and a stunning multi-media video light show.
According to Jackson Evans of the Opera House, âThey not only bring the music of the 1960's back to life, but they also bring back to life the influences that forged the music, without caricature or irony. They mesmerize, through projected images, costumes and ambiance, as much as the bands they present did in their original context.â
The social and political upheaval of the late sixties had a major influence on popular music that still resonates today. The Vietnam war is remembered in the Neil Young anthem, "Ohio", performed along with archival footage of the Kent State protests and president Nixon's reaction. "Space Oddity" by David Bowie is paired with images of the Apollo missions and the first lunar landing. Psychedelic songs like "White Rabbit" are performed with an authentic recreation of the liquid light shows originally seen at the Fillmore West and Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco.
Mellow Yellow has gained a reputation for impeccable renditions of songs by The Beatles, The Monkees, Tommy James, The Supremes, the Moody Blues, and more. Vermont Maturity magazine called them "the most authentic sounding sixties band imaginable." Video and audio clips are available on the bandâs website, www.mellowyellowband.com.
The sixties may be over, but thanks to the Mellow Yellow Experience, audiences of all ages can hear the music, and feel the spirit, today.
The doors open at 7:00 and the show starts at 7:30.
