GRETCHEN PHILLIPS
Gretchen Phillips has been performing music for nigh on thirty years. Upon graduating from Houston's High School For Performing and Visual Arts she moved to Austin where she has made her mark. A member of such popular '80s and '90s bands as Two Nice Girls and Girls in The Nose as well as Lord Douglas Phillips, the '00s have found Gretchen performing solo. Never content to settle on just one style of music, her albums and live performance feature country, folk, rock, gospel, disco, and expermental music. What ties all of these disparate elements together is her lovely voice, sure guitar playing and songs that range in subject matter from love to politics to spiritual matters to the everyday. Her new solo show features songs that are played on electric and acoustic guitar, as well as keyboards, and are interspersed with her readings of memoir and ruminations on current events. A unique show with a lot of heart.
"If there's such a thing as a fringe legend, Gretchen Phillips qualifies..." Jason Cohen, Texas Monthly Review December, 1998
