A Master Revealed: Paliashvili's Liturgy of St John Chrysostom
The Chorale uncovers an unknown masterpiece by the "father of Georgian classical music." Composed in 1909, the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Zakharia Paliashvili (1871-1933) combines the mystical beauty of the Orthodox Divine Liturgy, the powerful harmony of traditional Georgian chant, and turn-of-the-century Russian liturgical compositional technique. These concerts culminate a two-year project by the Chorale to create a new performing edition and transliteration, based on a copy of a copy of microfilm of the original 1909 score found in the Lenin Library in Moscow. This will be an American premier. It will be performed in Georgian.
