Blues Broads Dance Concert in Nevada City
Once in a while a show comes around that is so amazing and unique that I have to pinch my self to make sure I'm not dreaming. This show, with four of the greatest female voices in contemporary blues, soul and gospel is certainly one of those.
The Blues Broads are a unique combination of singers Tracy Nelson, Annie Sampson, Dorothy Morrison, and Angela Strehli.
Tracy Nelson came on the Bay Area scene from Wisconsin and captured a loyal following with her band, Mother Earth. Her astounding voice makes whatever style of music she chooses to sing, her own. Her composition "Down So Low" became her signature and has been recorded by Etta James and Linda Rondstat, among others. After her second album she relocated to the Nashville area. She continues recording and touring, and on occasion she comes back to the Bay Area to enjoy being a "Blues Broad". www.tracynelson.com
Annie Sampson, youngest of 12 children, was raised in rural Louisiana, and her style exemplifies those deeply soulful roots-- whether she's singing blues, rock, a country ballad, or a modern folk classic. After locating to the Bay Area, she followed a long run with the musical "Hair" with fronting the popular group Stoneground. They recorded four albums and toured internationally. She continues to work and record with her own group, and she's an essential ingredient of the Blues Broads. www.globerecords.com/anniesampson
Dorothy Morrison was lead singer and co-author for the Edwin Hawkins Singers' recording of "Oh Happy Day", which became an international hit, selling 7 million copies, and which is still is the "national anthem" of American Gospel Groups. Though coming from the world of gospel, she was persuaded to become a Blues Broad, where she lifts everyone up, both musically and personally. She tours and records internationally.
Angela Strehli is probably the most truely "blue" of the Blues Broads. She devoted her life and career to the heroes of that genre, knowing and singing with so many of the greats, from Muddy Waters to Albert King to Stevie Ray Vaughan, and supporting them through helping establish Antone's in Austin, Texas, known worldwide as a blues "mecca". She migrated to Marin County 20 years ago, and is now part of a wonderful food and music venue, Rancho Nicasio, where she first organized and presented The Blues Broads to such success that now, in 2010, they will also appear in other venues and at festivals.
In this unique show, each artist gives the audience a taste of their individual specialty, and then they combine voices in ways that make the Blues Broads much, much more than just the sum of its parts. Along with backing musicians considered to be the best in the business, the Blues Broads give a musical experience that is truly unforgettable.
This will surely be an rare and unforgettable evening at the Historic Miners Foundry in downtown Nevada City.
