Steffen Kuehn - Smooth Jazz Stars Celebrate CD Release: Trumpop!

The music of trumpeter Steffen Kuehn's new CD, Trumpop,, is so cool that it's already been targeted by Hollywood. The title track of the CD was used in the soundtrack to the movie Birthday Girl, starring Nicole Kidman and Ben Chaplin.

Now Kuehn is ready to release the full CD, and he comes to Jazz at Pearl's to celebrate the event. Trumpop, is a smooth jazz tour de force featuring some of the Bay Area's top jazz players, all of whom will join Kuehn at Pearl's. Percussionist Brian Collier has played with Santana, and guitarist Ray Obiedo has played with Pete Escovedo and Herbie Hancock. Pianist David Matthews, a Pearl's favorite, tours with Etta James and is a past member of Tower of Power. And bassist Marc van Wageningen has played with both George Duke and Sheila E.

Kuehn's fluid style and rock-solid skills have created a demand for his services from artists like John Handy, Mark Levine, Chico Freeman and even the Platters. Jazz at Pearl's fans will recognize Kuehn for his frequent appearances on Monday night with the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra.

Steffen Kuehn was born and raised in Germany and began playing the trumpet at the age of eight. Twenty years later he received his Bachelor of Music from the prestigious University of North Texas in 1993, majoring in Jazz Trumpet and Jazz Studies. While at North Texas, he received two Down Beat awards for being a member of the "Two O'clock Lab Band" that was voted "Best College/University Band" in 1991 and 1993. He has also studied with jazz greats such as Tim Hagans, Brian Lynch and Claudio Roditi. In Europe, he played as a sideman for the Dusko Gojkovich Big Band, Al Porcino Big Band, Conexion Latina and others. He's also appeared in the show bands for productions of "Annie," "Damn Yankees," "Phantom of the Opera" and "Evita."

He has performed with The Platters, Marilyn McCoo, Bob Hope, John Handy, Mark Levine, John Fedchock, Chico Freeman, Tim Hagans, Ray Obiedo and Kenny Werner, to name but a few.

Kuehn is now a San Francisco Bay Area resident. He performs regularly with the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, the Black Market Jazz Orchestra, Julio Bravo, Louis Romeros Mazacote, Mike Zilber's Carma Big Band and many other local musicians and bands.
