A WORLD'S END El Fin Del Mundo (The end of the world) as a concept, as a territory and as a piece, of course, is the work of cellist Claudio Pea, drummer Gabriel Spiller and clarinetist Gustavo Hunt a space to occupy. The most important musical virtue of this CD is that the trio explores different ways of occupation without filling the space completely, without inhabitting it, so that those who listen can also have a space of their own. The various images, climes and atmospheres generated by the characteristics of the compositions and by making the most of timbric resources and of sound production are much more stimulating than evocative or suggestive. And although referentiality is present (Inmersin Immersion, Tango XXI, Cancin de los Derviches Dervish Song), it is by no means shown as something absolute or enclosed but rather as a spark that will light a different kind of fire in each individual. Moving between improvisation and the accuracy of music writing (Hardcore para Tres Hardcore for Three) and with its beautiful melodies (Girasoles Sunflowers) and excelent work of rythmic interplay between the percussion and the cello, El fin del mundo requires and deserves our presence.
New Directions Chamber Brass is a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to breaking down barriers of musical categories. This rhythmically explosive genre-bending brass and percussion ensemble brings together some of Philadelphias finest classical, jazz, and free improvising musicians to combine their talents and form a new innovative brand of chamber music. NDCB is comprised of two trumpets, two trombones, and two percussionists. Each musician offers his or her own voice to create a truly unique sound. Trumpet artist, composer, and NDCB founder Thomas Madeja created this ensemble in response to a growing need for accessibly presented original sounding contemporary music. This also drives the groups commitment to education. In a concert setting, master class, or interactive recital, NDCB strives to engage its audience through a mutual experiencing of the creative process. There are no limitations in regard to performance venues either. NDCB has performed in such varied institutions as churches, recital halls, and jazz and nightclubs. Audiences from all walks of life continue to be intrigued and stimulated as part of the reciprocally inspiring community that evolves during each performance.
