Gansango at Seattle Center
In 2006, Gansango Artistic Director Etienne Cakpo received a UNESCO Aschberg Residency to live and study at lEspace Sobo Bade. While there, Cakpo shared his Beninois traditional dance styles with the dancers of Sobo Bade and they in turn shared the distinctive, frenzied dance style of Senegal, most purely represented by a dance called sabar a name it shares with the distinctive drum that accompanies it. Once familiar with the elemental styles, he began to apply techniques of contemporary dance to arrive at a pure hybrid that will develop into a repertoire featured in Benn Lau (We Are One). Giant Magnet is very happy to bring these arts together.
