Event
Orfeo, Eurydice & The Serpent
Five Words in a Line presents "Orfeo, Eurydice & The Serpent" - a new satirical chamber opera made up entirely of fragments from multiple versions of the Orpheus myth at Theatre 80 St Marks on Friday, April 9 and Sunday, April 11. Bits of recitative, arias, duets and trios from known scores by Claudio Monteverdi, Christoph Willibald Gluck and Jacques Offenbach are interspersed with rarely performed music by Baroque composers Luigi Rossi, Antonio Sartorio and Georg Telemann, classicist Joseph Haydn and the 20th Century composer Darius Milhaud with additional instrumental music on the underworld by Hector Berlioz, Franz Schubert and George Crumb.
Mezzo-soprano Jessica Grigg plays a vain Orfeo long past his prime with soprano Sara Paar as the philandering Eurydice hell-bent on climbing the social ladder one husband at a time. Soprano Helen Gabrielsen brings out the best vices in both as the cunning Serpent who takes a bite out of Eurydice and lures the couple down to the underworld for an extended stay.
