Dr. Carol Nichols is a prominent psychologist whose loving family appears to be a model of harmony and stability. Carol and her husband, David, are devoted to their two adult daughters, Katie and Lauren, and to Emily, their beloved granddaughter. Despite the obvious strength of their bonds, the Nichols family is far from perfect, and they struggle to come to grips with a dark secret from their past. Carol's professional and personal restraint almost reaches the breaking point when she unexpectedly collides with inspiration in the form of Anna, a troubled, single mother of three rowdy-but-lovable young boys.
