Rainier Arts Center presents Congolese Rumba Music and Dance
Rainier Arts Center is delighted to kick off 2017 with a performance of Congolese Rumba dance with youth performers from local community group, Nsanga Cultural Group, on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 7pm.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, seniors, and youth 12 and under, and can be purchased at-the-door or online at Brown Paper Tickets.
Congolese Rumba originated in the Congo basin, with Cuban influences, in the 1940s and gained popularity through the 1960s and 1970s. In Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, it is called Lingala after the local language. In Zambia and Zimbabwe, they call it rumba.
For the emerging African communities in Western Washington, Congolese Rumba is part of a music and dance heritage that brings together people across generations and regions of origin.
Nsanga Cultural Group is a local organization working to support the African communities in the Greater Seattle area through social services, civic engagement, and cultural education and preservation.
