Free Street has been creating theater with Chicago's low-income communities since 1969. Our roots are in the spirit of social questioning that followed the assassination of Dr. King. We continue asking what is next for community, individual, and creative development. For the past two decades, we have focused on making art with youth. We believe creativity is an essential, common language and that its fluency is teachable. Our creative process teaches youth to become virtuoso artists. It is no coincidence they are simultaneously developing the skills they need to become self-actualized adults.
