Kathleen Bride-Harp A Tribute to Marcel Grandjany

Kathleen Bride teaches at the Eastman School of Music and is a noted performer.

Bride has appeared as recitalist in London and the Netherlands, in addition to appearances in major cities across the U.S. She has been guest recitalist at the Cheltenham International Festival of Music, the Maria Korchinska International Harp Competition, Holland Harp Week, American Harp Society National Conference, and Lincoln Center Project. As solo harpist on a European tour with the Juilliard Ensemble of Contemporary Music and composer Luciano Berio, Bride recorded contemporary chamber music on the Philips and RCA Victor Labels.
Bride and organist Jon Gillock have, since 1978, toured the U.S. as duo-recitalists. Bride also performs as part of a touring duo with British flutist Judith Pearce. She has been soloist with Colonial Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Ridgewood Chamber Orchestra, Wayne Chamber Orchestra, Scranton Philharmonic, and Korean Chamber Ensemble.

Kathleen will be playing the works of Marcel Grandjany , a French born harpist who came to America after his studies with Henriette RenieHe toured widely in Europe and North America and was co-founder of the Quintette Instrumental de Paris, for which composers such as Vincent dIndy and Albert Roussel wrote works. From 1936 he made his home in America, taking out American citizenship in 1945. He taught at the Manhattan School and from 1938 at the Juilliard School as well as for some time also in Montreal. Distinguished as a performer and as a teacher, he also wrote a quantity of music for the harp, all of it well suited to the instrument, including original compositions and transcriptions.

Samuel Milligan is known as an arranger, performer  and a champion of young artists. Since 2000, he has indulged his love for early Spanish music, an interest that had been encouraged years before by Nicanor Zabaleta, the Spanish harp virtuoso. For many years he organized various conjuntos for the performance of this music, the repertory covering the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, with emphasis on the music of the Spanish colonial New World. This involves much music for strictly diatonic harps, which Milligan defends by making a comparison to visual art, saying: "In the same way that a black and white drawing by Leonardo da Vinci is no less great art than any of his paintings in color, so a diatonic piece of music can be as artistically significant as something chromatic. In fact, economy of means can add to its artistic value."
Milligan has been the recipient of two recent awards. One, in 2008 from the American Harp Society, honors his outstanding service to the AHS and to the harp. Another, presented by the Somerset Harp Festival in 2014, is in honor of his lifetime achievement.
