Mandolins on Rittenhouse Square: Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble and New York Mandolin Ensemble in Concert
The profiles of the mandolin ensembles based in Philadelphia and New York are, in many ways, very similar. Both groups (1) draw their members from diverse diverse musical backgrounds,(2)perform an eclectic repertoire of mostly new music for mandolin ensemble (much of which is composed or arranged by members of their respective ensembles), and (3) include instrumentation that extends the expressive range of the traditional mandolin and guitar orchestra. Both ensembles utilize cello, and the Philadelphia group also includes hammered dulcimer, percussion, recorder, and voice (in addition to the typical mix of mandolin family instruments, guitar, and bass).
This concert marks the first collaboration between the Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble (founded and directed by Joe Todaro) and the New York Mandolin Ensemble (founded and directed by Steven Antonelli). The ensembles will perform two separate sets, separated by a short intermission. The repertoire draws upon classical, jazz, blegrass, and world music influences. The concert will culminate with both groups joining together to perform two original works written by ensemble members.
