"Farruquito is one of the greatest flamenco dancers of the century"  The New York Times

The Bay Area Flamenco Festival/Festival Flamenco Gitano, is proud to present Farruquito in his triumphant return to US after more than a decade. Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya 'Farruquito', is the reining patriarch of the Farruco Family: first family of Gypsy flamenco dance. The son of Flamenco singer Juan Fernández Flores, 'El Moreno' and dancer Rosario Montoya Manzano 'La Farruca', he is the chief proponent of unique dancing style founded by his grandfather, 'Farruco'. Throughout his life he has been immersed in the culture of Gypsy flamenco and grew up dancing in family gatherings, weddings and baptisms.

Improvisao is a return to the essence of flamenco where the artists shed all artifice, relying on improvisation to create an intimate and visceral encounter with the audience. The electrifying chemistry among them sparks their inspiration. Vocals, guitar and dance are fused with complete freedom, creating an utterly unique performance every night and a context for the miracle of theduende.

"With the power and purity of his technique and the magic of his brooding presence, Farruquito is nothing less than sensational. The speed of his stamped rhythms is complex and phenomenal, no less so his spins and interpolations."   The New York Times, Anna Kisselgoff

Farruquito made his début on the international scene in NYC at the age of five in the legendary Broadway production, "Flamenco Puro". Since then he has devoted his entirety to the preservation and innovation of his beloved art form.

At the age of eight he appeared in Carlos Saura's film "Flamenco," dancing alongside his grandfather, El Farruco. That same year, he joined his illustrious family in the show "Bodas de Gloria," participating in its artistic and choreographic conception. In 1992 he performed at the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Paralympics and at the Andalucía Pavilion during the Expo Seville World's Fair in the show "Presente, Pasado y Futuro".

The death of his grandfather and maestro Farruco in 1997 signalled a changing of the guard in the dynasty and Farruquito was entrusted with the responsibility of perpetuating the family lineage. At the age of 15, he created his first solo show, "Raíces Flamencas", in which he distinguished himself as a dancer of a new dimension, who couples all his traditional knowledge with a prodigious personal artistic conception. From its début at the London's Royal Festival Hall, this display of vibrant Gypsy flamenco achieved instant success, which was then repeated at the Villa and Conde Duque Theaters in Madrid, the Poliorama Theater in Barcelona and on international tours in France and Japan.

In 2001, Farruquito and his family performed at the Flamenco USA Festival and following performances in New York and Boston, the New York Times rated him as "the best artist who set foot in the Big Apple in 2001." The following year he led the cast of the show "Por Derecho" and toured eleven North American cities --including Berkeley, CA-- stunning the critics with the vitality of his art and personality. Furthermore, Farruquito's genius did not go unnoticed by the great photographer Richard Avedon or by the US magazine People, which named him "one of the most beautiful people in the world."

In November of 2003, the opening of his show "ALMA VIEJA" at the Maestranza Theater in Seville was a huge success. The success of this show was repeated at the Albéniz Theater in Madrid and the Victoria Theater in Barcelona and went on to be seen on many other Spanish stages, also triumphing in the UK, France, and Italy.

Throughout his career Farruquito has never lacked critical acclaim or artistic accolades. In 2004 alone he received a plethora of awards such as the "Premio del Público" for best Flamenco dancer, the "Flamenco Hoy" Award for best Flamenco dancer, the "Telón Chivas" Award for best dancer, and the prestigious APDE Award as "the dignified repository of the legacy of Gypsy flamenco dance."

In 2008, he launched the production "PURO", with 14 musicians on stage and a stunning display of dance technique. With performances in Palma de Mallorca, Jerez, and Seville (XIII Flamenco Biennial), the critics were unanimous, "Farruquito reigns again!" PURO toured countries such as Israel, Holland, and Mexico, receiving rave reviews wherever it took to the stage.

In 2011 he launched the show "BAILE FLAMENCO" at the Compac Theater in Madrid, performing to a sold out house for 4 consecutive days.

In the summer of 2012, he premiered "SIEMBRA", featuring his youngest brother, dancer Manuel Fernández Montoya or 'El Carpeta'. With music and lyrics composed by Farruquito, "Siembra" presented a series of dances passed down from family elders and updated with a personal twist, conveying the continuity of the Farruco family's enduring and thriving legacy.

In 2013 he toured Spain and South America with his production 'Abolengo,' sharing the stage with dancer Karime Amaya, granddaughter of Carmen Amaya.

At the Bienal de Sevilla 2014 he presented the premier of "Pinacendá," a tribute to the diverse regions of Andalucia. This was one of the last performances featuring his late aunt, the legendary "Faraona" Pilar Montoya.

Most recently he has been performing the ever-changing production 'Improvisao' in Festivals and theaters around the world to great critical acclaim.
