Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Goran Ivanovic Trio Featuring Cellist Ian Maksin

Two of Chicago's hottest solo instrumental artists are joining their talents once again to create a one-of-a-kind fusion of styles and sonorities: Ivanovic's electrifying mix of Balkan, Arabic and Flamenco with Maksin's soulful blend of classical, jazz and world music. The eclectic program willrange from solo numbers of Ivanovic's and Maksin's original compositions as well as Maksin's ground-breaking and funky solo cello arrangements of Top 40, rock and blues tunes, to full-band renditions of folk songs from different corners of the world, funky arrangements of popular classical pieces as well as their own original compositions. And by popular demand, there will be more Astor Piazzolla! Maksin and Ivanovic will be backed by two of Chicago's most sought-after musicians, percussionist Peter Pete Tashjian and bassist Matt Ulery.

Having toured extensively on three continents, cellist and composer Ian Maksin has gained international recognition for his beautiful tone and distinctive style, as well as his uniquely charismatic way with the audience. In Chicago, he has been a frequent guest on WFMT, WBEZ and Chicago Tonight, his performances appear regularly as "Critic's Pick" in Chicago Tribune as well as the Time Out Magazine. Apart from being recognized as one of the leading classical artists, Maksin has taken the cello well outside its conventional scope and plays jazz, rock, world music, blues, flamenco and more. He has performed with such artists as Sting, Andrea Bocelli, Barry Gibb, Beach Boys, P. Diddy, Snoop Dogg and Gloria Estefan.
