Join us for a night of music performed by acclaimed Palestinian composer and musician Ramzi Aburedwan and his Arabic-French Dal`ouna Ensemble during their U.S. premiere tour.
Bringing together musicians from the Arab world and the West, Dal'ouna's music crosses many boundaries, promoting diverse intercultural exchange through fusion of Palestinian folk music, world and classical music, and jazz.
THE DAL'OUNA ENSEMBLE: Ramzi Aburedwan (viola and bouzouki) Ziad Ben Youssef (oud, percussion) Edwin Buger (accordion, keyboard) Tareq Rantisi (percussion) Lena Seikaly (vocals)
Ramzi Aburedwan, is the founder of the renowned Al-Kamandjati music centers, which have served thousands of Palestinian children in the West Bank, Gaza and in refugee camps in Lebanon. The Dal`ouna Ensemble is named after a festive Palestinian music genre whose influences extend from Egypt to Andalusia, passing through various regions and traditions of the Middle East and adding medieval and jazz accents. Dal`ouna combines traditional Arab instruments including the bouzouki, oud, and percussion with viola and accordion. Their repertoire ranges from instrumental to traditional poetic genres that focus on love, freedom, and nature.
The tour corresponds with the release of "Children of the Stone: The Power of Music in a Hard Land" (Bloomsbury, April 2015) by Sandy Tolan, author of the international bestseller, "The Lemon Tree." The new book tells the story of Ramzi whose iconic image as an eight-year-old boy throwing a stone during the first Palestinian uprising captures the universal desire of Palestinians for freedom.
The book traces Ramzi's subsequent transformation from a frustrated youth growing up in a refugee camp into a widely-respected classical and Arabic musician. He subsequently graduated from the acclaimed collaboration between Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said: The National Conservatory of Music in Ramallah. Ramzi then received a full scholarship to attend a music conservatory in France, and has subsequently realized his dream of founding music schools for Palestinian children. Al Kamandjati, Ramzi's music academy, has programs in the cities of Ramallah and Jenin, and in Palestinian refugee camps in the West Bank and Lebanon, serving thousands of children.
The Children of the Stone/Dal'Ouna Tour is a musical and literary tour de force, bridging cultural divides by promoting diverse cross-cultural sharing through fusion of unique musical and literary works including Palestinian folk, world and classical music, jazz, combined with biographical narrative nonfiction. At the heart of the tour, which brings together musicians from the Islamic world and the West, is Ramzi's own struggle in the midst of violence and hopelessness to find meaning and to protect and encourage children through music.
The concerts will include compositions by Ramzi, virtuoso performances by gifted Palestinian singers, percussionists, string musicians, oud and bouzouk players, and dramatic readings from Tolan's book, backed by the Ensemble.
In the midst of so much ongoing violence in the world, the Children of the Stone/Dal'ouna Tour brings hope, documenting the creation of something beautiful under exceptionally difficult circumstances.
