FIRST ANNUAL RAFAEL MANRIQUEZ FESTIVAL - A Chile Series Event
Join us in celebrating Rafael Manriquez' spirit and talent by making the First Annual Rafael Manriquez Festival a reality where Bay Area talent will perform published and unpublished songs by Rafael Manriquez. We have booked the event at La Peña Cultural Center on May 9th, 2015 at 8 PM. Jackie Rago, Lichi Fuentes, John Santos, Avotcja, Fernando Torres, Marcia Manriquez, Manuel Manriquez, Ricardo Valdivieso, Esteban Bello, Axel Herrera and Hugo Wainzinger are among several musicians who have agreed to play.
We will be debuting songs from "El Pajaro Vuela" a recording Rafael made in the eighties that was never published with musicians like John Santos and Rebeca Mauleon in the mix. Rafael's CD "El Pajaro Vuela" will be available for purchase. A part of the funds raised during the concert will go towards the production of a new Rafael Manriquez CD with 14 unpublished songs whose unfinished recordings have been found in his archives.
This event is produced by the Manriquez Family and Duamuxa. Sponsored by Iris Arts & Education Group Rafael's Bio: Rafael Manríquez was an indefatigable cultural worker, composer and renowned exponent of Latin American music in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Originally from Santiago, Chile, he was a virtuoso string player, playing multiple styles on the guitar, charango, cuatro and tiple to reveal the richness of Latin folk rhythms influenced by the Spanish, Native American and African cultures. His compositions illustrate the beauty, customs, people, struggles and hopes of Latin America.
Rafael's lyrics in his native Spanish are beautifully crafted stories and poems resounding with the rhythms and hues of Miguel Hernandez, Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, his literary inspirations. His music has been recorded on over a dozen albums published in the USA and Chile and used in several documentaries, such as "Chicano Park", "La Jaula de Oro," and "Un Solo Camino." He performed throughout the Americas and Europe for more than three decades at small and large venues always seeking to teach and communicate his ancestral culture. Rafael's musical contributions have left an indelible mark on the souls of those who were lucky enough to partake in his performances.
