Milo's Music Parlor presents Helen Gillet
Globe Trotting, multi-faceted, jazz-based cellist, singer, composer and improviser Helen Gillet is a "mixed bag" of musical influence. She has won awards as best "other instrument" in New Orleans' Best of the Beat Awards and Downbeat Magazine recently nominated her a Rising Star in their Annual Critic's Poll. She believes music to be an expression of the entire human condition, performing an eclectic mix of French pop, avant garde jazz, North Indian Hindustani vocal raga, folk and classical styles.
Helen's eclectic "outside the box" improvising has allowed her to play in a wide array of rock, jazz, electro-folk, irish pop, and funk bands including The New Orleans Bingo! Show, Morphine with Jeremy Lyons, Danny Burns, the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra, the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Smokey Robinson, Hamid Drake, James Singleton, Johnny Vidacovich, Quintron, Nikki Glaspie, Carl Leblanc, Skerik, Michael Ray, Allison Miller, Rob Wagner and Rob Cambre.
Her live solo performances include an acoustic cello, looped electronics, vocals, possibly a vintage E.V.I. trumpet and anything else she can reach. Ms. Gillet threads her tri-continental childhood web into her performances creating a beautiful pastiche of sound.
