The Lyre Association of North America is pleased to host the next International Lyre Conference at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, from Monday, August 3 (3:00 pm) to Saturday, August 8 (2:00 pm). This will be preceded by a Lyre Pedagogy Conference, 1-3 August, 2015.

Lyre 2015 offers a varied program around the theme of The Lyre As Instrument for Peace: Giving Ear Toward Understanding and Reconciliation. In addition to a morning musical plenum, afternoon lyre groups, and evening concerts, we will have two different types of workshops: morning workshops related to our conference theme and afternoon workshops on more wide-ranging topics of general interest to our lyre community.

Examples of Workshop Offerings include:

- Gerhard Beilharz  Accompanying Songs with the Lyre
- John Billing  Improvisation with the Lyre on the Conference Theme
- Jan Braunstein  Musical Forms and Free Improvisation
- Christian Giersch  Practicing "Fratres" by Arvo Pärt, and Individuality as a Source of Peace, improvisation exercises for lyre groups
- Hajime Kira Simple Daily Practice for good tone, sounds, melody playing of the lyre

More information on Workshops and Lyre Groups will be available soon along with music for conference participants.

THIRD LYRE PEDAGOGY CONFERENCE - We are looking forward to a special conference for teachers and others interested in exploring the many approaches to teaching the lyre. This conference is scheduled immediately before our general conference, from Saturday, August 1st afternoon through Monday morning, August 3rd. We hope that many conference attendees will plan to come a few days early in order to participate in this important event.

YOUTH LYRE WORKSHOP - We are also very pleased to be able to host a workshop for young people from age 9 through adolescence, which will take place concurrently with our general conference. The lyre will be introduced and worked with as the primary musical experience; other new instruments, such as gongs and other metal instruments, bordun lyres, and bowed instruments will also be used. The morning youth schedule will include improvising and playing together as well as practicing a selected piece of music to be presented at the concluding concert of the conference. In the afternoons, other activities will be offered, such as crafts and outings to the surrounding area. The workshop will be led by Christina Porkert and Veronika Roemer with additional adult leaders for the afternoon activities. For more information, please contact Veronika at vbrtnstn@gmail.com or 610-377-3086.

TRANSPORTATION  We encourage international participants to fly to the Detroit (DTW) Metro Airport, which is approximately a half-hour drive from campus. Transportation by shuttle ($22 for a shared van includes space for two bags + 2 carry-ons per person) is available to and from the airport.

The rooms are suite style, containing four private bedrooms, attached to a shared living space.  Within the building are multiple fitness/lounge areas and a café-style dining hall. Also included are a private bath per suite, air conditioning, laundry facilities, and a staffed 24-hour reception desk with card access system.
