FIREBIRDS - an African inspired ballet
A reprise of the successful 2012 Fenix Drum and Dance ballet featuring music and dance of the African diaspora on April 25 & 26 @ 8:00 pm at the 24th St Theatre in Sacramento.
Sacramento's premier traditional African and Afro-Caribbean dance troupe will open with the powerful story "The Phoenix", to the haunting harmonies of the balafon. This will be followed by mesmerizing and pulsating drum compositions and dances that guide the listener into the depths of the Phoenix Bird's eternal cycle of birth, death and resurrection.
The story slips into the second movement of the three-part ballet with dancers and actors narrating the inspirational story of the "Freedom Bird's" desire to be free of mankind's petty prejudices. This is brought to life with a dramatic confrontation played out against the pulsating West African beats of Doundouba, the dance of the strong men.
The third and final scene tells the story of the Fire Bird, a blazing creature born of the depths of a desire to understand and control fire. Featured here in a grand finale are dancers bedecked in carnival finery celebrating life to its fullest.
An African marketplace will be open at 7:00 pm for patrons to browse a selection of authentic African handmade products. Wings and Roots, a family themed reggae band will provide pre-show entertainment from 7:30 pm.
