Gamelan Sekar Jaya Music and Dance of Bali: World Premiere of WARNA
Gamelan Sekar Jaya brings forty performers to the Julia Morgan Theater Stage to present an evening performance of lush and breathtaking pieces for Balinese gamelan and dance. The audience will be treated to the thrilling interlocking melodies of the bronze Gong Kebyar ensemble, as well as the moody dynamics of the virtuosic gender wayang ensemble. The evening-length performance will include traditional works and the world premiere of "WARNA," (translating to both "color" and "caste,") an interdisciplinary and intercultural work by Sekar Jaya's resident Balinese Artistic Directors Ni Ketut Arini, and I Made Subandi. TARI WARNA, a dance work set to Gender Wayang ensemble with western instrument accompaniment and Balinese vocalspushes the boundaries of traditional and contemporary aesthetics as it explores love through the lens of caste and caste difference as experienced by contemporary Balinese. KREASI WARNAan instrumental work by I Made Subandi for Gong Kebyaris a wild new creation by one of Bali's foremost composers who embraces musical challenge like a heated tango partner and fills the soundscape with color like an old master fills a canvas. Come see for yourself why Spin Magazine said "Sekar Jaya rocks like a wild hog storming through the forest."
Don't miss this rare opportunity to see the premiere of an exciting new work by two of Bali's leading artists!
