West Hollywood Women's Leadership Conference

We have an exciting lineup of keynote speakers, workshops, and panelists this year. Our annual Friday night kick-off on April 19th, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. features a keynote address from Geena Davis, Chair of the California Commission on the Status of Women and Founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
The keynote address will be followed by an exclusive screening of the Academy Award nominated film "The Invisible War" and a panel discussion will follow the movie featuring producer Amy Ziering, Madeline DiNonno, Executive Director of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, Allison Gill, US Navy Veteran and Advocate, Director Kirby Dick and will be moderated by Maria Hall-Brown, PBS SoCal. The exclusive movie screen is open to the public but seating is limited.

The following day will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with an opening plenary session from Agapi Stassinopoulos, Inspirational Speaker and Author of Unbinding the Heart. The first session of the conference will feature an in-depth panel conversation titled: "50/50: Leadership, Representation and Equality." This panel session will be moderated by former state legislator Sheila Kuehl and feature Heidi Shink of the Victory Fund, Stephen D. Simon, President of the Stonewall Democratic Club, Kim Berglund, Director of Children's Programming for PBS Kids and Elana Pianko, Chair of the LA Council for the National Women's History Museum. The first session will also feature a workshop focused around goal setting titled: "Dream, Set, and Achieve: Set Your Goals and Make It Happen" led by Sahar Andrade. The morning will also feature workshops on how to get appointed to a local board or commission that will feature current West Hollywood Board and Commission members and is cosponsored by the Women's Advisory Board of the City of West Hollywood as well as the power of mentorship.
Our exclusive keynote luncheon is titled: "Leadership Under Fire" and will feature a conversation between Sandra Fluke, Women's Rights Advocate and Attorney and Patti Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, and Chanchanit Martorell, Executive Director of the Thai Community Development Center. The conversation will be moderated by West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land, Executive Director and CEO of the Trevor Project.
BREAKOUT FACILITATORS: The afternoon features entrepreneurship intensive sessions that is being curated by At the Helm. It will start off with an in-depth panel discuss of women in business and feature successful female entrepreneurs from the local community. The panel will consist of Donna Queza, Nailah Blades, Merissa Grayson, Principal Attorney at the Law office of Merissa V. Grayson, Denise Walker, Founder, Pivothq and Madelyn Alfano, President, Maria's Italian Kitchen. After the panel discussion, the session will continue with three exclusive break out sessions titled: "Your Network is Your Net Worth," led by Alaia Williams, Founder of One Organized Business, "Your Brand, Your Future," led by Nailah Blades and Donna Queza and a session dedicated to social networking titled: "Social Media- Social Networking for Success" led by Tonya Cooke of Adler Integrated. The afternoon will continue with a session led by Locsi Ferra from the Women and Girl's Lead Campaign titled: "Using the Power of Storytelling and Media to Become an Agent of Change," that will feature selections from Women Hold Up Half the Sky, Brooke Christopher, Director of Philanthropic Integration at Enlightened.org. Global Girl Media. Helane Wilbourne of the Wilbourne Consulting Group will lead an interactive workshop around communication titled: "Effective Communication: Saying What You Want and Achieving the Career You Want." Further workshops will be focused around women and technology and a second "How to Get Appointed to a City Board of Commission" session led by the West Hollywood City Clerk's office.
The conference will conclude with a closing program titled: "Becoming Change: The Women's Leadership Conference and You," that will feature Maya Paley, Director of Community Engagement and Special Programs at the National Council of Jewish Women Los Angeles and Refugee Rights Advocate that will inspire conference attendees to continue to become advocates and leaders in the communities everyday by focusing on ways in which they can continue to be involved via the programming that our conference partners, such as yourself, put on year round!
Throughout the conference, there will be ongoing tabling from our partnering organizations and opportunities for conference attendees to get involved with campaigns such as Denim Day, and other advocacy and skill-based workshops and programming that occur throughout the year.
