Portland Revels Autumn Salon with Founder Richard Lewis and Guest Artist Ruth McLain
Our next salon will take place on November 1. Presenters will be Portland Revels Founder Richard Lewis and guest artist Ruth McLain, visiting from the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains in Berea Kentucky. The topic will be Cecil Sharp and his exploration and collection of Appalachian ballads during 1916-1918.

About Richard Lewis:
Founder and chief perpetrator of Portland Revels since 1994, Dick is also the former Executive Director, Oregon Council for the Humanities and current Adjunct Humanities Faculty, Linfield College

About Ruth McLain:
Ruth McLain grew up in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in the small town of Hindman, Kentucky, where the mountain culture was strong. Spending her life singing traditional music, Ruth has been a soloist and member of a musical family, The McLain Family Band, performing throughout all 50 states, as well as in 62 foreign countries as musical ambassadors for  the US State Department. She and her family have represented the Appalachian region and mountain music at thousands of festivals and concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry & the Lincoln Center, during the past 44 years.  Ruth now lives in Berea, Kentucky, singing and playing traditional music, promoting literacy, gardening, and cooking for her appreciative family.  "...smoothly professional and bursting with talent."  Courier-Journal, Louisville, KY
