NW PUPPET CENTER'S 3rd CRANKIE FESTIVAL
With special thanks to Sue Truman and The Crankie Factory, Northwest Puppet Center is proud to present an evening dedicated to this unique folk art which combines live music with storytelling and shadow puppetry. These hand-crafted scrolls are mounted in boxes and stories unroll as it cranks along.
Our 3rd Crankie Fest features a fabulous line up of artists, each with their own style of music and visual artistry. This one night only event features the talents of:
Katherine Fahey
Based in Baltimore, Katherine Fahey is a papercut artist and shadow puppeteer; a candid and thoughtful artist equipped with a storyteller's voice and meticulous with craftsmanship. In the past six years, Fahey's paper cutting work and her love of story telling has taken her down the exciting road of performance and collaboration through shadow puppetry. She has created shadow puppet and paper cut artwork for music videos for Baltimore musicians including Wye Oak and Ellen Cherry. Three of Katherine's shadow puppet videos have been in film festivals at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and one at the Atlanta FIlm Festival. In 2012 and 2011 Katherine has held residencies at Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Katherine has performed at the National Puppetry Festival twice and was recently commissioned to create a show for The Peabody School of Music. This last year she created her largest and longest piece yet for The Yorktown Jamestown foundation for their new museum in Yorktown, Virginia. This piece will be featured in a film as well as remain in the permanent collection of the museum. Katherine's work continues to grow and evolve with the sophistication of her papercut artwork, storytelling, and shadow puppetry techniques.

Squirrel Butter
This husband and wife duo of Charlie Beck & Charmaine Slaven, started performing together after meeting at a music festival in 2005. Sharing a deep love of traditional music, they explore the genres of old-time, early bluegrass, blues, country, & cajun while adding their unique perspective to these traditions and threading these influences into their original compositions. They are anchors of the old-time music, honky-tonk, & square dance communities in the Pacific NW and beyond. Charmaine has the one and only foot-powered crankie box, so that she can play guitar, sing and crank the box at the same time. Dejah and Louis Leger
Dejah is a talented graphic artist and musician so crankies provide the perfect combination. Along with her father-in-law, Louis, they present Acadian and French-Canadian music paired with Dejah's paper cut images and shadow puppetry. When joined by the rest of their family, La Famille Leger is known for keeping musical traditions of Quebec and New Brunswick vitally alive in the Pacific Northwest. To help others get started with their own crankie artistry, Louis Leger is now making crankie boxes which are ready to assemble and ready for your creativity.

Podorythmie
Podorythmie, which means "foot rhythms" in Quebecois, is a five person group from Seattle. It is led by The Crankie Factory's Sue Truman (chief crankie maker, fiddle and podorythmie) with Pascale Lelong (accordion and vocals), Prairie Wolfe (fiddle, vocals and podorythmie), Julia Derby (guitar, podorythmie and cranker), Cil Pierce (guitar and podorythmie). They combine stepdancing, crankies, fiddle and accordion. Sue hand-stitches the scrolls from felt and fabric. Through Sue's Crankie Factory website, she has become the point person for crankies, providing advice for artists around the globe and giving presentations across the nation and in Europe. Sue Truman has also been key in organizing every crankie festival in Seattle!
