Tone Colors of Autumn
This concert features the music of the shakuhachi, the traditional end-blown vertical bamboo flute of Japan. The principal performers are three internationally known masters in the lineage of Yokoyama Katsuya: Furuya Teruo, Matama Kazushi and Kakizakai Kaoru. For this performance they will be playing a mix of traditional and contemporary pieces including music from the Zen temples of Japan (called Honkyoku), 20th century tone poems by Fukuda Rando, ensemble pieces with koto accompaniment, and a modern flute quartet commissioned for this performance.
Mr. Furuya, Mr. Matama and Mr. Kakizakai currently serve as the main instructors of the International Shakuhachi Kenshukan (Study Group) headquartered in Tokyo. In addition to being famous as teachers and performers of the shakuhachi in Japan, each of them is revered by shakuhachi students and fans from many other countries for their amazing command of the instrument and for their tireless devotion to teaching and promoting shakuhachi repertoire around the globe.
For this performance, they will be joined by two local artists, Mitsuki Dazai from Eugene, Oregon playing koto, and Larry Tyrrell from Portland, Oregon playing shakuhachi. Mr. Tyrrell is also the composer of the quartet written for this concert.
