THE PLANK STOMPERS Plank Stompers do not like to think of themselves as a group; but rather, as a movement. Before knowing Plank Stompers, you must first know the Preamble to the Stompstitution: "We, the Stompers of the United Planks, in order to form a more funky union, establish ruckus, insure intergalactic stank-quility, and provide listening pleasure to whoever we may encounter along the way, do hereby proclaim: If sound was butter, and the last 250 years were a biscuit, then Plank Stompers would be the hypothetical knife that smears, scrapes, and swirls all of the sounds from the past together. Pickaxes and pianos, war woops and woodwinds, fiddles sawin' and crows cawin', bass drones and mobile phones, all getting pushed into a greasy noise anthology."This is not to say that their music is an unorganized, incoherent smattering, but rather, is untethered to the previous burdens of genre-specificity. What began as a coffee shop college town duodoing tricks for tips and trying to interpret the meaning of bluegrass while occasionally pissing off cats that wasn't hip to their experimental soundshas turned into a vehicle for group improvisation and a melding of old time soul with futuristic funk. Plank Stompers are now embarking on a mission to engage both themselves and their audience in singing, dancing, clapping, and getting down with their bad selves. Lace up yer stomping shoes!
DANNY KNICELY & AIMEE Danny Knicely comes from a musical family steeped in a mountain music tradition for generations. Danny has used his roots in old-time and bluegrass to explore various types of music from around the world. Danny is also musical director for the Mountain Music Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving traditional musicians worldwide, and he plays a major role in a feature length documentary film called "The Mountain Music Project". As a multi-instrumentalist, Danny has won many awards for his mandolin, guitar, and fiddle expertise, including first place in the mandolin contest at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival. His masterful mandolinistry and original compositions can be heard on his debut album "Roots and Branches" and his colorful, versatile, acoustic guitar picking can be heard on his latest release "Waltz for Aimee". As a very sought after session musician, producer, and arranger, Danny appears on countless recordings and has worked with Chris Eldridge, Artimus Pyle, Purgatory Mountain, The Woodshedders, Tony Trischka, Keller Williams, David Via, Furnace Mountain, Sara Jarosz, Bruce Molsky, and many more. The bands and musicians that he has performed with is equally as impressive and can be viewed here. Aimee Curl has an unmistakable breathy sound and sultry style that combine in a musician of incredible depth. She has a voice distinctive with emotion and sincerity that makes even the most hardened listener soften and swoon.Aimee grew up singing in church and with her family. In her early teens, she learned the lap dulcimer and joined her first band. She met other musicians, started singing more, and began experimenting with other instruments, such as guitar, fiddle, and bass. She left home and spent the next ten years playing the electric bass and touring the country with a band named ThaMuseMeant. Next, she studied at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, where she picked up the upright bass fiddle. Aimee returned to Virginia, and now performs at major festivals and venues in the U.S. and overseas. JAKE AND THE BURTONES Jake and the Burtones is more of a concept than a band. With an ever changing member list the Burtones do their best to provide a healthy mix of Old Time Appalachian music as well as bluegrass and soulful originals, with the occasional Grateful Dead tune thrown in. They often absorb members from The Plank Stompers, Mink's Miracle Medicine, Space Canoe and a plethora of other amazing local bands. Not much for words, Jake and the Burtones let the fiddle do the talking!
