Almshouse plays original folk-rock that maybe reminds you of classic 1970s female-fronted acts (think Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Linda Ronstadt) or maybe modern singer-songwriters with a pop/rock edge (Sheryl Crow, Jonatha Brooke, kdlang). The bands 2016 release Bitter Thing flirts with Americana while displaying a slightly darker progressive tinge. Their trademark dual guitar leads that wrap harmonically around each other is used to powerful effect in the new single, Gaslight." It's true Almshouse can rock hard and loud, but they also masterfully explore stripped-down acoustic versions of their own tunes and carefully curated covers that showcase thoughtful lyrics, Irenes sultry burnished alto voice, very handsome fretwork by Troy, Ken & Tony, and Jamess tasteful drumming.

The Hot Club Of Philadelphia

December 07, 2018 8:00 PM
The Hot Club of Philadelphia was started in 2001 by guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig. They are an acoustic ensemble, dedicated to playing 'Gypsy Jazz.' That's the term used to describe the music pioneered by the legendary original 'Hot Club of France Quintet,' which was led by guitarist Django Reinhardt and Violinist Stephane Grappelli. Django and Grappelli were attempting to do their own version of American 'Hot Jazz,' as played by stars like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They used acoustic guitars, bass and violin, rather than horns and drums. Grappelli and Django added some French and Gypsy flavor and created a blend of music that is quite popular and accessible. The HCPhilly mixes the original style of the HCOF, along with their own modern influences

Hotsy Totsy

January 24, 2019 8:00 PM
HOTSY TOTSY is a Collingswood, NJ based, indie-pop trio who broke onto the Philadelphia music scene in early 2014. Long time best friends Jenny Pilong, Diana Carino, and Amanda Brizzi decided they wanted to co-create a new and original sound that would, not only highlight their individual talents, but foster unique harmonies and a seamless blend of voices. While their sound is definitely inspired by the girl groups of the 40s, 50s, & 60s, to quote John Vettese (The Key at WXPN), this band covers much more sonic territory than just that, from showtunes and vaudeville to jazzy expanses of mystery and vibe a la Bat For Lashes.

The Peace Creeps

February 01, 2019 8:00 PM
The Peace Creeps is the current musical project featuring former As captivating frontman Richard Bush. Richard and his As were the darlings of Philly in the 70s and early 80s and had the hits After Last Night and A Womans Got The Power, which was later recorded by both Clarence Clemons and Jennifer Holliday. They released two albums on Arista Records and toured nationally, but they disbanded due to disputes with their record company. After that Bush had a few other bands and then took a long hiatus to write and record. Finally, along with guitarist John Marchiano, bassist Roy Fisher and drummer Jeff Pancoast, The Peace Creeps were born. Bush and song writing partner, AJay McLaughlins clever lyricism, along with their Elvis Costellolike wit, Faceslike looseness and the pop sensibilities of the Beatles are reasons for their appeal.
