The Taste of Sweet with Joanne Chen / Culinary Historians of NY
Avoided by health fanatics and banned from the strictest of schools, sweets are among the most demonized of foods today. But this wasn't always so. Joanne Chen will take you on a journey through sweets' glorious past when sugar was considered more luxurious than any spice and more medically potent than the bitterest drug. She'll also explain why Americans love pie, why there are no "good" desserts in Chinese restaurants, and whether sweets are in fact fattening and addictive. Find out, too, whether you're a supertaster - and, if so, why your "much too sweet" is another's "not sweet enough."

Joanne Chen is a contributing editor at Marie Claire magazine, freelance journalist, and voracious eater of cakes and cookies. Her book "The Taste of Sweet: Our Complicated Love Affair with Our Favorite Treats" (Crown 2008) was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection last summer. Her articles have appeared in such publications as Vogue, the New York Times, Gourmet, O: The Oprah Magazine, and LIFE.

A range of delicious, sweet refreshments will be served, including Chinese Pastries, Mochi (Japanese rice-based sweet), Honey Cupcakes, Traditional Pound Cake... And a sparkling wine.
