In 1937, future Beat Generation icon William Burroughs married Ilse Herzfeld Klapper. She arrived in New York in 1939 and was hired as a secretary by writer and activist Ernst Toller. This new play imagines the meeting of these three travelers in landscape of exiles, growing fascism, and attempts to erase history. Can writers change the world with words? Or should authors stand apart from power?

Mark Hetfield, CEO of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, and Alex Aleinikoff, Director of the New Schools Zolberg Institute on Migration & Mobility and the former UN Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, discuss the history of popular opposition to refugees and especially how it has impacted children, from the Kindertransport to the Trump Administrations child separation policy. NPRs international correspondent Deborah Amos, who has reported extensively on refugees in the Middle East and across the globe, will moderate the discussion.

Veit Harlans 1940 antisemitic film was not the first film adaptation of Lion Feuchtwangers novel. A 1934 version made in the UK was the first important film by German-Jewish exiles. Frank Stern (U. Vienna) will compare the two works, one of which analyzed antisemitism while the other sought to inflame it.
