Snoqualmie Pass Avalanche Dog Educational Seminar (SPADES)
3 Day Seminar March 14-17, Check in March 14th 6-8PM
To train dogs to locate subjects that are lost, and may be partially or completely buried in the snow.

Who may Attend: Open to active members of Washington State Search and Rescue Dog Groups. (DEM number required)
For best training opportunities, training group size will be limited to 10 handler/dog teams per day.
Sign up will be on a first come/first serve basis. A waiting list will be available.

Equipment:
All participants should be able to bring the following equipment to each training event. Avalanche Transceiver Avalanche Probe Avalanche Shovel Family talk radio Appropriate Attire to spend the entire day out of doors. Appropriate food to bring into the field for your lunch. Appropriate equipment to travel rapidly, comfortably and competently on the snow.
Handlers with dogs may attend this series at the cost of $100 per dog team.
Overnight accommodations are included in the price. This includes family style dinners and continental style breakfast.Sleeping bags for handlers, and kennels for dogs should be provided by overnight guests.

Location: Snoqualmie Pass, the specific locations will be determined by the lead trainer with consideration to snow depth and safety at the time of the seminar.
Instructor Biographies Kevin Huggett(shown here with Bazuka): A professional ski patroller with the Summit at Snoqualmie for the past 15 years, Kevin Huggett does Avalanche control work and is bringing up his third Avalanche Rescue Dog.
Kevin is the Kittitas County Search and Rescue (KCSR) Dog Group leader and past President of Alpental Backcountry Rescue K9s (BARK). He is a National Search Dog Alliance (NSDA) Avalanche Dog Team Evaluator and has handled three Labrador Retrievers in SAR. He and the dogs have certified/re-certified in Avalanche Rescue through NSDA, BARK, and KCSR. Kevin and the dogs have attended Avalanche training with the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA), Wasatch Backcountry Rescue (WBR) and the Swiss Alpine Club (IKAR).
Porter and Bazuka have AKC titles in Trailing (Tracking), Bazuka certified in HRD through IPWDA and Jett is certified in Airscent through SARDUS and KCSR.
Certified as a BARK Avalanche team in 2003, Kevin and his first dog, Porter learned the ropes. Kevin and Bazuka then certified in as a BARK Avalanche team in 2004. Now, Kevin is bringing up a new dog, Jett. Jett received certification in Airscent at just 17 months through Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States (SARDUS). They will train with CARDA in January, and hopefully, certify as an Avalanche Rescue team later this season.
Kevin has been involved in development of Avalanche Dog Team training standards as well as training for BARK and contributed to the evaluation standards for NSDA.
Kevin, Bazuka and Jett train as often as possible and are regularly deployed on both winter backcountry and summer backcountry missions through KCSR and BARK, and assist other groups when requested.

EMT for 18 years.
Certified Ski Patroller, Assoc. of Professional Patrollers, 2002. Have judged in categories of Avalanche Science and Control, Risk Management and Skiing.
Dog Handler since 2002.
Instructor for Stevens Pass Swiss Avalanche Dog School in 2012, 2010, 2008 and instructed Avalanche Dog School at Alyeska Mountain Resort, Girdwood, 2012.
Attended Stevens Pass Swiss Avalanche Dog, 2005. Attended WBR Dog School 2007. Responded to 2 inbounds un-witnessed avalanches. No finds.
Responded to 2 out of bounds slides near the ski area and all victims were partner rescue, totaling 4 fatalities.
Responded to 1 search on Granite Mountain near Snoqualmie Pass. No find was made.
Responded to house destroyed by an avalanche at the Kahler Glen Golf Course community. It was determined that no one was in the house and the search was called off.
Avalanche Certifications: Level 2, AAA Jackson WY.
Dog 11 year old yellow Labrador Retriever. Certified 3 times with WA BARK, first in 2007 and last in 2013. 1st Stevens Pass BARK Dog to certify 3 times.
