Skip Theory Presents: HIDDEN: A GENDER
Kate Bornsteins 1989 play "Hidden: A Gender" is a series of episodic and interconnected stories and sketches about the joys and dangers of gender and expression. It tells the semi-autobiographical story of Kates social and medical transition in the 1980s, and weaves Kates story alongside an imagined account of the real 19th Century French intersex person Herculine Barbin. Their stories are framed by emcee Doc Grinder and his Gender Defender lackeys, who present Kate and Herculine as cautionary tales--but Doc soon loses control over the narrative when those characters begin to push back.
