Jason, Medea and the Tragedy at the PS19 Talent Show
"Film and theater artist Mark Blane transposes the titular couple to twenty-first century New York City in a lean, captivating solo show that ingeniously reimagines the ancient Greek hero and sorceress as West Village actors." - Thinking Theater NYC's John R. Ziegler and Leah Richards
See this "hilarious" and "emotional roller coaster" of a Greek tragedy updated for modern times. Originally premiering Off-Off-Broadway in 2024, it received praise from Theatre Beyond Broadway for its "exquisite structure and pacing; there is never a dull moment!"
This solo show is written and performed by Mark Blane (JJ Abrams Little Voice) and directed by Dante Fuoco (SEAL, Dixon Place). The production returns for a summer engagement in the intimate 20-seat Tiny Baby Blackbox Theatre, presented by spit&vigor in the West Village.
A married couple (Jay and Dea) living in the West Village is upended when Dea, a rising film actress, publicly confesses during a promotional Q&A that she killed her brother in self-defense. The revelation triggers a media frenzy, pushing the couple into crisis, and thus begins a torrid affair with Jay and Dea's Hollywood agent's non-binary offspring. The piece traces the collision of public scandal and private unraveling through video, sound and live performance.
Downtown writer and cultural critic Enzo Escober writes "Mark Blane has an electric kind of talent; his face is as ductile as putty, civil one moment and criminal the next."
Recent Praise: "Captivating" "Funny, sharp, emotive"
