Proof (Staged Reading)
Proof is a compassionate and brilliant exploration of a family gifted with genius and fraught with mental illness. The enigmatic Catherine has spent years taking care of her father who slipped from mathematical genius to insanity, after years of notoriety for his work. Upon his death, Catherine and her sister must sort out how to move forward. Her sister offers a pragmatic solution, believing Catherine incapable of taking care of herself and feeding Catherines fear that she may have inherited her fathers propensity toward mental degeneration. A discovery of a mysterious proof in the notebooks scattered about the house by an unlikely suitor complicates their lives even further and challenges everyones perception of Catherine, including her own.
Performed by veteran VCS actors: Robin Walbeck-Forrest, Rochelle Wyatt, Peter Cook, Greg Lucas and René Schuchter.
Directed by Robin Walbeck-Forrest. This is Robins debut as a director. Robin has been seen on-stage in many VCS productions over the years. Some of the most recent productions are Jake's Women, Superior Donuts, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, Beckys New Car, A Night of One Acts and Wind in the Willows.
Proof was developed at George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, during the 1999 Next Stage Series of new plays. The play premiered Off-Broadway in May 2000 and transferred to Broadway in October 2000. The play won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.
"When we think of the great American playwrights, we think of Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill and Lillian Hellman, in earlier generations; Wendy Wasserstein and Tony Kushner, Jon Robin Baitz and Donald Margulies today: They are always writing about big ideas and wrapping them in family squabbles that get us where we live. Welcome David Auburn to the club." -- NY Magazine
"...combines elements of mystery and surprise with old-fashioned storytelling to provide a compelling evening of theatre [PROOF is a] smart and compassionate play of ideas." -- NY Daily News
"PROOF surprises us with its aliveness... Mr. Auburn takes pleasure in knowledge... At the same time, he is unshowily fresh and humane, and he has written a lovely play." -- NY Observer
"[A] wonderfully funny... ambitiously constructed work..." -- Variety
