2010 Bay Area Day of Remembrance
DAY OF REMEMBRANCE 2010 - "Dreams Interrupted, Dreams Fulfilled"

Sun. 2/21/10, 2-4 pm, in San Francisco Japantown at Sundance Kabuki Cinema, reception to follow at JCCCNC

Please join us at the annual Bay Area Day of Remembrance (DOR) commemoration, which will take place on Sunday, February 21, 2010, 2 p.m., at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas and the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, both located in SF Japantown.

DOR has been an annual inspiring expression of our community vitality.  Through cultural presentations, education and a candle lighting ceremony, its been a unique opportunity to commemorate the incarceration of over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II.  In the post 9/11 years, as the nation struggles through another war abroad and other communities have been targeted as the enemy, DOR has become a time for diverse communities to stand together to carry the light for justice, and reaffirm a united commitment to civil and human rights today.

The 2010 Day of Remembrance will be MCd by Jana Katsuyama, reporter for the KTVU Channel 2 News Team.  The keynote speaker will be California State Assemblymember Warren Furutani, author of Assembly Bill 37, the bill extending honorary degrees to individuals whose college educations were disrupted due to the evacuation and internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.  The Purple Moon Dance Project choreographed by Jill Togawa, will perform excerpts of their work, "When Dreams are Interrupted,"  revisiting the forced removal of the Berkeley Japanese community in 1942.

The 2010 Clifford Uyeda Peace and Humanitarian Award will be presented to distinguished human and civil rights activist Yuri Kochiyama.  The traditional candle lighting ceremony will feature a diverse array of community volunteers and advocates, and include the music by Masayuki Koga (shakuhachi).  An Interfaith Gathering and Procession will be led by the Japanese American Religious Federation from the theater to the Japanese Cultural and Community Center, where a reception will conclude the day.

Our 2010 theme, "Dreams Interrupted, Dreams Fulfilled" - commemorates Nisei whose pursuit of a college education was disrupted by the wartime relocation and internment, and to the enduring value the Japanese American community places in the importance of education and access to higher education.

Tickets prices are $15 (door); $12 (advance); and group rates ($10 each for 10 or more in advance). Call NJAHS for tickets: (415) 921-5007 or visit: www.dayofremembrance.org for more information and online ticket sales.
