Farming 101 - Veterans in Agriculture
The mission of the Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) is mobilizing veterans to feed America. Begun in 2008 by long-time organic farmer Michael O'Gorman FVC counted Marin Organic as one of its earliest partners. FVC now has a network of 3500 veterans in all 50 states that are farming or interested in farming. This last year internships were set up for veterans at Star Route Farms and Slide Ranch, through support from the San Francisco Foundation. Matt Smiley is a student of Sustainable Agriculture at UC Davis, an Iraq War veteran, and a farmer from Petaluma. He will represent FVC at the meeting.
