Fitzmaurice Voicework/Butoh Workshop
Bring greater emotional courage, expressivity, and truth to your work. In this intensive workshop, you will explore physical and vocal methods of drawing out raw emotion and primal impulses for use in performance. It'll be fierce!
(A similar workshop was recently taught at the Yale School of Drama)
Instructors Angela Martinelli and Gin Hammond have both taught and performed at various institutions, studios, and theaters throughout the U. S., Canada, and Europe, including The Actors Theatre of Louisville, Cornish College of the Arts, Freehold Theatre, Cambridge University, Harvard University, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and the Gage Academy of Arts.
WHY BUTOH? Wouldn't you rather understand the truth behind your reactions, thoughts, emotions? Butoh connects you with your inner light, focus, truth. It allows a way for us to grab onto the meat of our own existence. To tackle those thoughts that are otherwise shunned for societal norms, and bring up the energy to move our bodies with such thoughts.
Personally, I am a dancer, a true dancer. I dance because dance is life, it is not just for entertainment. I am addicted to movement. I move because we can only exist if we use our bodies. It allows us to go forward and let the blood rush through our veins, pumping thought, energy, and light into our intellect. It allows our nerves to feel, generate ideas and love. Butoh allows us to find that trueness, that love. It allows our juice to be energized, not shunned, or taken for granted and often times we use more of our own being, not the surface box we show others. www.angelamartinelli.net
WHY FITZMAURICE VOICEWORK? A very physical approach to voice, Fitzmaurice Voicework explores the dynamics between body, breath, voice, the imagination, language, and presence. It encourages vibrant voices that communicate intention and feeling without excess effort. No other approach to voice has helped me as much when it comes to fully inhabiting multiple characters, embracing the chaos of live performance and emotional extremes, performing solo shows without strain, and feeling more energized after performing because I was open to receiving the energy of the audience. Fitzmaurice Voicework is taught at Yale School of Drama, at Harvards ART Institute, and at numerous other institutions and theatres in the United States and abroad. www.ginhammond.com
