Emerald Mile
In the winter of 1983, the largest El NiƱo event on record battered the entire West. That spring, a massive snow-melt sent record runoff down the
Colorado River toward Glen Canyon Dam. As the water approached the dam's parapet, worried federal officials desperately scrambled to avoid the worst case scenario  the possibility of one of the most dramatic dam failures in history.
In the midst of this crisis, by the light of a full moon, a trio of river guides secretly launched a small wooden dory  "The Emerald Mile" - into the Colorado just below the dam's base. IF everything went as planned, the Emerald Mile would traverse 227 miles of treacherous white water, then catapult into legend as the fastest boat ever propelled  by oar, by motor or by the grace of God through the heart of the Grand Canyon.

KEVIN FEDARKO has written for Outside, Esquire, National Geographic and Adventure.  He studied political science at Columbia University and Russian history at Oxford before joining the staff at Time Magazine. "The Emerald Mile" won the National outdoor Book Award, the Reading the West Award, and was a finalist for a PEN Literary Sports Writing Award. He lives in Flagstaff and works as a part-time whitewater guide in the Grand Canyon.
