"The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail"
"The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" by Robert Edwin Lee and Jerome Lawrence explores Henry David Thoreau's practice of expressing his individuality and refusing to submit to what he considered an unjust authority. Jailed for not paying taxes that would be used to support the Mexican-American War, Thoreau refuses to let the cell and bars become a prison. Unshackled in thought, he leaves the cell several times during the play to interact with his brother John, their mother, the beautiful Ellen Sewell, and the man who most influenced Henry's life, the great Ralph Waldo Emerson.
