Kung Pao Kosher Comedy and El Rio Present...
Comedy Returns to El Rio!

Now in its 6th year, this monthly (every 3rd Thursday) comedy show features an eclectic mix of comedians. A Kung Pao Kosher Comedy and El Rio production. MC'ed by Kung Pao's Lisa Geduldig.

The October show will be a BENEFIT for Women Organized to Make Abuse Nonexistent, Inc. (W.O.M.A.N., Inc.), a community-based, multi-service agency, founded in 1978 as a two-bedroom shelter for survivors of domestic violence. The organization quickly realized that additional options were needed by survivors who, for many reasons, did not want to stay at shelters. In 1979, the support line was created, and the organization now receives over 18,000 calls per year. Soon after the support line was instituted, the agency began providing individual counseling and support groups, both of which continue as core services. Though no longer a physical shelter, W.O.M.A.N., Inc. provides: a 24-hour support line, drop-in support consultations (in English and Spanish), individual therapy and family therapy sessions for survivors with their children (in English and Spanish), peer support groups, a Latina Program, children's support groups, and a pet safety fund. The featured comedians this month are Maureen Langan (from NY), Betsy Salkind (from LA), and Bay Area comics: Yayne Abeba, Eloisa Bravo, Stefani Silverman, Lisa Geduldig, and Nick Leonard.

Maureen Langan is a New York City-based stand up comic who grew up with an Irish immigrant mother, garbage man father, and five siblings in Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey, where there is no lake. She's a regular at Carolines on Broadway in New York City, one of the country's premiere comedy clubs, and performs all over the US, Canada, and the UK. Maureen was a finalist in the San Francisco Comedy Competition, the first woman since Ellen DeGeneres to place in the top three. She is the recipient of the prestigious MAC (Manhattan Association of Clubs and Cabarets) Award for Best Female Comic. She has appeared on The Joy Behar Show, Comics Unleashed, and HBO. She is a regular contributor to HLN, FOX News, and MSNBC. She is an award-winning broadcast journalist who has hosted her own national TV and radio shows. Listen to Maureen as a regular fill-in host on Sunday nights on KGO Radio (810am). www.maureenlangan.com'

Betsy Salkind, best known as "Squirrel Lady" for her impersonation of a squirrel eating, has appeared on "Girls Night Out," "Last Comic Standing," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," and most recently "Fierce Funny Women" on Showtime. She was a staffwriter for Saturday Night Special and Roseanne, and is author of "More Than Once Upon A Time" and "Betsy's Sunday School Bible Classics," which was a USA Book Awards finalist (humor). Betsy also writes for the blog "Ethel's Law" and contributed to the anthology "No Kidding: Women Writers on Bypassing Parenthood." The Boston Globe said, "There are countless ways to make someone laugh, and Betsy Salkind knows most of them. Want sarcastic wit? Political humor? Or maybe just a good animal mime? Salkind can pull all that off and more."  www.BetsySalkind.com

Yayne Abeba is a native San Franciscan of Ethiopian descent. She recently starred in her own one-hour TV special "Africa Laughs with Yayne Abeba" on the Africa Channel, which broadcasts throughout the US, the UK, and the Caribbean. Yayne began studying acting at the Jean Shelton Actor's Lab in 1995 and was bitten by the comedy bug four years later at The Luggage Store. Realizing that there was no cure, she accepted her fate and has since been touted as one of San Francisco's up and coming comedians. Her style is fresh, innovative, cutting edge and just damn funny. She won The 2002 Russian River Comedy Competition and competed in several SF International Comedy Competitions as well as the Seattle Comedy Competition.

Eloisa Bravo started her comedy career soon after: 1) she discovered she couldn't have children; and 2) after a subsequent divorce. She holds nothing back and derives her material from real life, exploding with energy on stage. You'll notice her immediately for her Venezuelan accent and highly expressive performance; yet it's the nature and intensity of her material that will stick with you, with its unique perspective on the issues affecting urban, single women. Packed with energy and cuteness she will make you laugh, assuming you are lucky enough to understand her accent. She has performed at the San Francisco Punchline, the Purple Onion, Rooster T. Feathers, as well as the Palm Beach, Miami, and Hollywood Improvs. She has won several comedy competitions, produces comedy, and performed the past two years at Comedy Day.

Stefani Silverman is a San Francisco based comic dedicated to finding meaning in life through humor. A former attorney, she uses her hard earned critical thinking skills to talk about such complex topics as food, sex and things she sees on MUNI. Mostly observational, increasingly self revelatory, Stefani's comedy will get you laughing and keep you thinking. She is often hard-edged but tempered with sweetness - her comedy lends itself to everything from the dark drunk environment of the club and bar scene - to day time corporate and community events. Check her out at Blush! Wine bar at in the Castro where she produces Blush Comedy, a new bi-weekly free comedy show.

Nick Leonard performs his dry and sly humor at clubs around California and all over the world including Marsh Theater, NYU, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The San Francisco Fringe Festival, and the Vancouver International Comedy Festival. He is the co-founder of the Qcomedy Showcase (currently on hiatus) and the popular Bilarious Show in the National Queer Arts Festival.

Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (now in its 22nd year); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
