Event
Dangerous Territory with Penny Hancock and Kate Rhodes
Crime fiction has never been more popular. Everyone enjoys a thriller with compelling twists and turns, playing on our darkest fears. In this event, crime novelists Penny Hancock and Kate Rhodes will discuss how to create a page-turning narrative. They will discuss the narrative focus on setting, and consider how to create a believable landscape for characters to inhabit and how to use place as the basis for themes, to develop the psychology of the characters and in some cases, as a crucial participant in the plot.
Penny Hancock is a part-time primary school teacher at a speech and language school and has travelled extensively as a language teacher. Her previous novels are Tideline, a Richard and Judy Bookclub pick and The Darkening Hour. She lives in Cambridge with her husband and three children.
Kate Rhodes has taught English at Universities in Britain and the US, and now writes full time. She is the author of two collections, Reversal and The Alice Trap. She has been awarded fellowships for poetry by the English Speaking Union and Hawthornden, and has been shortlisted for numerous prestigious prizes, including the Bridport and Forward Prizes.
This is sure to be an intriguing and instructive afternoon, both for those interested in writing crime fiction and those interested in the intricacies of a fascinating and addictive genre.
