Open Graves and Open Minds: A Gothic Writing Evening
Embrace your dark side and find out about the University of Hertfordshire's undead project in the Gothic setting of the former prison Gatehouse.
The evening will open with a brief introduction to the university's Open Graves, Open Minds project and the accompanying vampire book, Open Graves, Open Minds: Representations of Vampires and the Undead from the Enlightenment to the Present Day, edited by Dr Sam George. Sam is a frequent commentator on the contemporary vampire; her interviews have appeared widely in the press including The Times, The Guardian and the Wall Street Journal.
She will be followed by Dr Catherine Spooner, a specialist in contemporary Gothic (fashion, literature and culture), talking about her chapter for the book Gothic Charm School or how vampires learned to sparkle and her new work on Post-Millenial Gothic, Comedy, Romance and the Rise of Happy Gothic.
Matt Beresford, folklorist, archaeologist and author of From Demons to Dracula: The Creation of the Modern Vampire Myth and The White Devil: The Werewolf in European Culture, will then talk about the research he undertook for his werewolf book, folklore and his involvement with the OGOM project and the Gothic Reading Group.
During the evening there will also be a book signing and Gothic themed canapés and drinks.
Wear something Gothicky and book early to avoid disappointment!
