The History of Polar Exploration
Join authors Isobel Williams and Nick Rennison for an inspirational event sure to be of interest to anyone thrilled by tales of bravery and exploration, the outdoors and local history.
Nick Rennison will talk about his book A Short History of Polar Exploration: The Pocket Essentials Guide, which will set the scene for Isobel Williams' more detailed talk about Dr Edward Wilson. Nick Rennison is an inspirational talker and following this talk you will be dusting off your atlas and looking up the places he talks about in more detail. You'll also want to follow up some individual stories of bravery and heroism.
Isobel will talk about the life and times of Dr Edward Wilson, Scott's confidant and friend as detailed in her book With Scott in the Antarctic: Edward Wilson: Explorer, Naturalist, Artist.
Wilson had many Hertfordshire connections. He lived in Bushey for all his married life. His brother lived in Harpenden and his protégée, Apsley Cherry-Garrard who wrote the famous book The Worst Journey in the World, lived at Wheathampsted.
This talk is likely to be brilliantly informative and of interest to anyone interested in local history.
