Building Design and Construction Systems :: ARE Workshop
The 2014 AIA|LA Emerging Professional Series Building Design and Construction Systems :: ARE Workshop
When:September 18th, 2014 (6:00 - 8:00pm) Where: DLR Group. 3130 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA
This workshop will cover the Building Design and Construction Systems (BDCS) division of the ARE. All three graphic vignettes will be demonstrated using the NCARB practice software. A holistic review of the Principles of Building Design will look at environmental issues, building codes and regulations, basic materials of construction, and the impact of selecting certain types of systems, materials and methods. Learning Objectives: Consider the impact of human behavior, historic precedent, and design theory in the selection of systems, materials, and methods on building design and construction. Consider the impact of applying principles of sustainable design including adaptive re-use, thermal and moisture protection, energy consumption and utilization, alternative energy, and hazardous material mitigation to proposed project. Incorporate building and specialty codes, zoning, and other regulatory requirements for inclusion in site design and construction. Consider impact of design decisions in the selection of systems, materials, and methods on building design and construction. Ascertain the impact of construction sequencing, scheduling, cost, and risk management on the selection of systems, materials, and methods.
Please consider bringing your laptop and downloading the NCARB Practice Program software for this seminar: http://www.ncarb.org/ARE/Preparing-for-the-ARE/PP-FAQs.aspx
Although it is optional for this workshop, Michael will be demonstrating step by step the common mistakes and correct solutions to the three vignettes on this ARE Exam, and having your laptop and the practice programs to follow along with will be greatly beneficial.
Parking: Unmetered street parking is residential permit restricted on most adjacent streets, so please check the parking signs carefully when you park. No-host parking is available for a fee in the 3130 parking garage off Franklin Street south of Wilshire.
