Elders around the country are proactively creating innovative wayssuch as Villages, co-housing, affinity groups, and house-sharing to have social support and community while maintaining independence.
Beth Baker, author of a new book, "With a Little Help from Our Friends: Creating Community as We Grow Older", will explore whether new models for "aging in community" can allow Elders to remain in their chosen communities throughout their lives.
Who should attend: Anyone who has asked: - Would I like to grow old in my own home? - Would I like to live in an intentional community? - Would I prefer to live among people my age as I grow older? - Is living among children important to me? - Would I like to try something completely different?
Presenter: Beth Baker, author of Old Age in a New Age: The Promise of Transformative Nursing Homes, is a long-time freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, AARP Bulletin, Washingtonian, and Ms. Magazine. She is the features editor of BioScience. Beth and her husband live in a close-knit community in Takoma Park, Maryland.
