Event
The Science of Meditation
An interactive workshop and colloquium exploring the science and practice of meditation.
This colloquium has been designed to highlight and discuss key issues involved in the study of meditation as an intervention to improve emotional and physical well-being. The format will include brief presentations of findings from recent seminal meditation studies followed by a roundtable discussion. For the first presentation, Dr. Charles Raison from Emory University will view data suggesting that a secularized version of Tibetan Buddhist compassion meditation may reduce behavioral and inflammatory responses to psychosocial stress that have been linked in numerous studies to both mental and medical illness. Dr. Stuart Eisendrath from the University of California, San Francisco, will discuss recent evidence that the addition of mindfulness practices to cognitive behavioral therapy may hold promise for individuals with major depression who have failed other therapies. Dr. Erika Rosenberg will conclude the presentation portion of the colloquium by presenting findings from the recently completed Shamatha Project regarding the effect of long-term intensive meditation on emotion regulation and compassion. Following these brief presentations, a roundtable discussion between the speakers will be moderated by Dr. Raison. Topics and controversies at the forefront of meditation research will be discussed. The colloquium will conclude with a question and answer period with the audience.
The workshop will include a mindfulness meditation class in the morning, taught by Dr. Erika Rosenberg, and a compassion meditation class in the afternoon, taught by Diego Hangartner (Director of Mind and Life International).
